Stafford Town 2 Goodrich 3
West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division
At: Evans Park
Kick-off: 3-00 pm
Admission: £4; Programme: £1 (28 pages)
Attendance: 65 (headcount)
Weather: cold and sunny
Duration: first-half: 45:08; second-half: 49:00

I initially made my way to Staffordshire University’s Beaconside Sports Centre for the West Midlands League game between Riverway and Mahal, after being told the game was ‘on’. It was until 25 minutes before kick-off when the referee decided to postpone due to a so-called frozen pitch. When I phoned Stafford Town just after noon, the matchday secretary told me the ‘game was on at the moment’. He was right and Town featured three former Stafford Rangers players in Dave Woodvine, Matt Buckham and Paul McMahon. Both sides scored once during the first half and Goodrich regained the lead in the 62nd minute. Stafford had a central defender sent off for protesting the goal and, with ten men, got back on level terms, but poor defending allowed Goodrich to bag the winner. In the crowd were former Stafford Rangers striker Tony Eccleston, a few friends from Marston Road, and Facebook friend David Thomas who provided good company during the second half.

Kick-off: 3-30 pm
Admission: –; Programme: – (– pages)
Weather: rain
Attendance: 36696
Duration: first-half: 46:00; second-half: 49:06

Perhaps because the stadium wasn’t packed and perhaps because the home side didn’t win, the third and final game of my mini Bundesliga tour didn’t reach the heights that 1. FC Köln did last night. Visitors Bayer 04 Leverkusen maintained their push for a Champions League qualification place with a comfortable win over bottom side Borussia Mönchengladbach. Two goals just before half-time from Michal Kadlec and Gonzalo Castro put the visitors in control though Gladbach were given hope in the second half when Martin Stranzl halved the deficit. But Castro scored his second goal to secure the points.

Goals:
0-1 Michal Kadlec (37)
0-2 Gonzalo Castro (45)
1-2 Martin Stranzl (65)
1-3 Gonzalo Castro (73)

1. FC Köln 3 SV Werder Bremen 0

Saturday 22nd January 2011
1. FC Köln 3 SV Werder Bremen 0
At: RheinEnergieStadion
Kick-off: 6-30 pm
Admission: 39-00 euro; Programme: free (4 pages)
Weather: mild, dry
Attendance: 45100
Duration: first-half: 45:08; second-half: 45:12

If anyone compiled a bucket list of 100 grounds that must be visited, I would strongly argue that 1. FC RheinEnergieStadion should be included. Pretty much a full house generated a terrific atmosphere, the pre-match anthem sung passionately by the Köln fans and a decent performance by the relegation-threatened home side. Lucas Podolski scored a goal in each half and Adam Matuschyk netted a vital second goal on the half-hour. Köln by the way is Cologne in English.

German efficiency got me from Aachen to the RheinEnergieStadion without a worry or a hitch: train to Horren, S-Bahn line S12 to Koln-Weiden West (a massive park-and-ride station) and an S-Bahn tram to the RheinEnergie-Stadion stop.

My first impression – a huge stadium with a tall glass light tower in each corner. Outside the stadium, there was plenty of beer and bratwurst for sale from numerous vans and stalls.

I picked up a club magazine from the club shop (at the north end) and also a glossy folded A3 programme, both given away free. Inside the stadium, my ticket was for the upper tier of the Osttribüne block O12. I think I made a good choice and enjoyed a decent view of the game sat next to two vociferous home supporters with some away fans close by. If Aachen was very ‘yellow’ then Köln was very ‘red’.

As part of the pre-match entertainment, a goat was paraded in front of the players tunnel – shown on the big screen – and also tee-shirts were catapulted into the crowd not by the goat! Before kick-off, fans sang their rousing hymn as they raised their scarfs above their heads – one of those ‘hairs standing up on the back of your neck’ moments!

At the start of the weekend, 1. FC Köln (16 points from 18 games) occupied 16th position in the 18-team division. They occupied the relegation play-off position, just one point and one position above the two-team automatic relegation zone. Visitors Werder Bremen (22 points from 18 games) were two places higher.

Teams were announced in the unique German style which involved the announcer shouting out the number and player’s Christian name for the fans to yell back the said player’s surname. There were a couple of familiar names – Koln’s Lucas Podolski the German international striker and Bremen’s former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre.

After the teams changed ends after the toss, 1. FC Köln got this top-flight Bundesliga game underway attacking the Südtribüne where home fans were massed on the large terrace behind the goal.

And those vociferous home fans were soon celebrating an early 7th minute goal. Fabrice Ehret ran down the left and pulled the ball back for Lucas Podolski to hit an angled first-tim eleft-foot shot into the far right corner of the net.

Köln doubled their lead just after the half hour mark with a flowing swift passing move. Andrezinho fed Adam Matuszczyk who, on the edge of the area, beat two defender and rifled a low shot from 17 yards out past Tim Wiese into the bottom left corner.

As the interval approached Bremen replaced Felix Kroos with Marko Marin, a player who was seemingly subsequently booed and whistled every time he touched the ball. Why? [Back home, a quick look at the player’s Wikipedia page provided the answer – Marin is a former Borussia Mönchengladbach player]

The two goals were replayed on the big screen at half-time. Not having a stadium fan card to purchase anything with, I sat and thought about the occasion I was thoroughly enjoying. Why was this different to an English Premier League game. Fans were watching the game drinking beer and rarely standing up in the seats. I suppose the fans who wanted to stand were massed on the Südtribüne terrace. I liked the idea of safe standing but, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t enjoy my last experience of standing on a packed terrace at Middlesbrough’s old Ayresome Park in 1995 and wouldn’t want to do so again. There was also good friendly banter between the Köln fans and those from Bremen who chose to sit in the home areas.

The three fans sat to my left all disappeared only to return after half-time with a beer each in their hands – very un-English!

For the second half, Köln were now attacking the Nordtribüne, i.e. the goal nearest to my seat. Looking around, the stadium with a attendance of 45100 appeared to be sold out for home fans with spare seats in away area and spaces available on the small away terrace.

Werder Bremen created precious few chances and 1. FC Köln wrapped up an excellent win with a third goal scored in the 84th minute. Slawomir Peszko burst into the area on the right, rounded Wiese before pulled the ball back for Podolski to sweep home from 6 yards out.

After the match, I walked back to the RheinEnergie-Stadion S-Bahn station where, as no surprise, the platforms were packed. There was a choice of two routes: from Gleiss 1 to Dom, etc. and from Gleiss 2 to Haumarkt. I chose a Dom tram and got off at Friesenplatz and walked to the near-by Well Being vegetarian restaurant on Brabanter Str.

1. FC Köln (red/red/red): 1. Michael Rensing, 22. Fabrice Ehret, 4. Christian Eichner, 21. Pedro Geromel, 12. Andrezinho, 5. Martin Lanig, 15. Slawomir Peszko, 25. Adam Matuszczyk, 27. Christian Clemens, 10. Lucas Podolski (capt), 11. Milivoje Novakovič. Subs: 23. Kevin McKenna (for Peszko, 85), 37. Reinhold Yabo (for Clemens, 88), 6. Taner Yalcin (for Podolski, 88), 30. Simon Terodde (not used), 2. Miso Brečko (not used), 34gk. Miro Varvodić (not used), 32. Stephen Salger (not used).

Alemannia Aachen 4 Karlsruher SC 2

Saturday 22nd January 2011 (13:00)
Alemannia Aachen 4 Karlsruher SC 2
2. Bundesliga
At: [Neu] Tivoli Stadion
Kick-off: 1-00 pm
Admission: 32-50 euro; Programme: free
Weather: drizzle
Attendance: 19184
Duration: first-half: 45:13; second-half: 47:09

The second week of Bundesliga action in Germany after the winter break threw up three fixtures in western North-Rhein Westphalia which could easily be combined into a weekend ‘treble’. With 1. Bundesliga games at 1FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach to follow, the first one in 2. Bundesliga saw mid-table Alemnnia Aachen and relegation-threatened Karlsruher SC serve an entertaining game at rain-hit Tivoli Stadion.

Yesterday morning I flew from Birmingham to Weeze, took a short bus journey to Kevelaer from where I caught the half-hourly train to Koln (Cologne) changing at Krefeld. My base for two nights – Friday and Saturday – was the Pathpoint Cologne Youth Hostel.

There were frequent trains from Köln to Aachen, journey time about 1 hour, arriving to allow myself plenty of time for a bit of sightseeing before the 1-00 pm kick-off. I’d last visited the city in 1993 and today planned to look about the cathedral – closed due to a funeral – so instead spent time in the church next door. After lunch at Vitamin Bar I continued to the ground on foot, passing the old Tivoli Stadium which hasn’t of yet been demolished.

I picked up my pre-ordered ticket from the INFO-POINT booth behind the south-west corner of the ground and took my place in the Aachener und Münchener Tribüne, row 7, on wet seat with several millimetres of rainwater on the concrete. It was a good job I had with me a green Asda carrier bag to use as a seat cover!

The new Tivoli Stadium, as previously mentioned by another review I’d read, was very ‘yellow’ – yellow seats with lots of fans wearing yellow shirts. The ground was opened in for the start of the 2009/10 season and built next to the old crumbling stadium it replaced. Seats on three sides, including a section of prime ‘business’ seats and a large terrace – Bitburger Wall – at the south end of the stadium. Away fans had a small area of standing at the north-west corner.

Looking at a league table prior to last night's games, Alemnnia Aachen (24 points from 18 games) occupied 11th position, some 12 points behind leaders FC Augsburg having played the same number of games. Further down the table, Karlsruher SC (17 points from 18 games) occupied 16th position in the 18-team division.

It didn't hear the KSC team announced over the PA or see it on the big screen so initially noted down shirt numbers of those players who started or came on as subs. In contrast, a big fuss was made of announcing the home side – fans chanted the surname after the announcer gave the number and first name.

To make a real sense of occasion around five minutes before kick-off, home fans sang the fans’ anthem, a German version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with scarfs raise on the big terrace like the Anfield Kop. When the time came for the players to enter the pitch, the walk-on music was ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’, they lined-up in front of the ‘main’ Sparkassen Tribüne but didn’t partake in handshakes.

There were whistles when the teams changed ends after the toss which meant Aachen were attacking the home end in the first half. With lights on from the start, Karlsruher (wearing all white) got the game underway. ‘ANSTROSS 13.01h’ displayed in he screen.

Aachen (wearing yellow shirts, black shorts and yellow socks) got off to the perfect start with a goal in the 5th minute. A ball played towards the area deflected off a defender and kindly into the path of the overrlapping Timo Achenbach. He crossed low for the unchallenged Zolten Stieber to fire home a first-time right foot shot from the left corner of the area. The familiar PDC darts tune greeted the goals before the announcer started a familiar ritual of welcoming the goal in a well-versed manner involving the crowd.

Karlsruher got back on level terms in the 19th minute. Andreas Schäfer played a free-kick from the left forward into the area which fell perfectly for Timo Staffeldt to equalise with a first-time left foot shot from 15 yards out into the bottom left-corner.

It took Aachen three minutes to regain the lead. A poor back-pass clearance from keeper Luis Robles allowed the home side to attack down the left. Stieber crossed from the wing and Benjamin Auer headed home from six yards out.

A superb lob from the edge of the area near the right corner by Tolgay Arslan extended Aachen’s lead in the 26th minute. As a result of the goal (as with Aachen’s previous ones as well), another 50 litres of Bitburger was added to a total that increased to 800 litres with Arslan’s goal.

Even though hit was wet and drizzling, row 7 provided an excellent view of the game even with three of the four goals at the end furthest away.

The vast majority of supporters in the black business seats were late returning for the start of the second half. Fortunately for them, there wasn’t another goal until the 65th minute. The visitors reduced the deficit with a low drive from the edge of the area by Gaétan Krebs.

Aachen, now leading by just one goal, survived a scare in the 75th minute. Krebs dribbled into the area and forced a save out of David Hohs. The volume of singing and chanting by the home fans noticeably increased as a result.

Home nerves were settled in the 89th minute by Aachen’s points-clinching fourth goal. Stieber, in space, ran down the right and squared the ball for unchallenged Sergiu Radu to sidefoot home at the far post.

The full-time whistle signalled a 40 minute walk back to the station to catch the 15:51 train towards Köln.

Goals:
1-0 Zoltan Stieber (5)
1-1 Timo Staffeldt (19)
2-1 Benjamin Auer (22)
3-1 Tolgay Arslan (26)
3-2 Gaétan Krebs (65)

I decided to let someone else do the driving so headed to The Wirral by train via Liverpool Lime Street to Rock Ferry Station and a 10 minute walk to the ground. A couple of phone calls confirmed the game was on though I need not have worried as the pitch firm and dry, though ‘some scary looking clouds’ were gathering when I made the first call before leaving home. I was made to feel very welcome by every club official I met at a wonderfully friendly club who deserve more locals to make the effort to watch them. Bamber Bridge eased to a 2-0 lead at the interval before Laird reduced the deficit. A penalty restored Bridge’s two-goal led which became a 4-1 lead in the 73rd minute. The visitors then had a man sent off and Laird netted another consolation goal in stoppage time at the end.

Duration: first-half: 47:53; second-half: 48:19

Stafford Rangers’ Blue Square Bet North goal drought now stands at 480 minutes of league action plus stoppage time after a fifth consecutive league game without finding the net. Goals from Phillip John in first-half stoppage time and Alex Meechan late on suggest a comfortable victory for AFC Telford but Stafford were certainly the better side during the first half AND DESERVED A GOAL.

On the day after former England goalkeeper Tim Flowers resigned as manager, Danny Edwards, Jermaine Johnson and Ben Mills all went agonisingly close to becoming the first player to score a league goal since November. The trio were all denied by top drawer saves from Bucks’ keeper Ryan Young, named man of the match on his side’s official website.

Staveley Miners Welfare 6 Brodsworth Welfare 1

Saturday 8th January 2011

Staveley Miners Welfare went top of the table with a comfortable victory over bottom side Brodsworth Welfare, with a winning margin enhanced by two late goals. Both sides scored during the opening 175 seconds and from then on Staveley missed or had saved a hatful of chances. Brodsworth, who have now lost 22 consecutive league and cup games, didn’t look that bad and keeper Ross Adamson produced a series of excellent saves; they also hit the wodwork as well. Inkersall Road is a decent ground with a 138-seat stand and additional cover behind one goal. Work on a brand new clubhouse, which was open for business, is nearing completion to provide an impressive addition to the ground that is suitable in my opinion for Evo-Stik League football. All Staveley need to do is gain promotion and return to the NCEL Premier Division for the first time since 2001. This was another good day out at a welcoming club keen to move up the pyramid.

Unlike my two unsuccessful attempts to watch a game at Marston Road last month, everything went according to plan for the Stafford Rangers’ first home game of 2011. Everything that is expect the scoreline which left manager Tim Flowers still searching for his first league win in charge of The Boro’. Alfreton’s winner came in the 53rd minute through Liam Hearn though by this time they had been reduced to ten men. Anthony Howell had been shown a 32nd-minute straight red card shown for a dangerous challenge on Jermaine Johnson. Stafford striker Ben Mills was guilty of a couple of bad misses – one in each half – which could have earned his side a point. This was only my second Stafford game since I ceased being a member of the Rangers press in April 2008.

Even though it was a Saturday, most non-league footballers had the day off, so choice was limited. Garforth gave a definately 'on' when I phoned them so headed there, even though I'm back in the area tomorrow for a late Christmas family gathering. No goals in an average first half which Garforth dominated. The second half was far more pulsating with Garforth taking the lead in the 65th minute and Durham levelling in the 80th minute. Both scorers were substitutes who netted within minutes of taking the field. All in all, an enjoyable day at a friendly club.
